GE Oil & Gas recently announced that it will incorporate its award-winning, next-generation subsea electronics module, the VetcoGray SemStar5, as part of a contract to upgrade a suite of subsea control systems for StatoilHydro’s Tordis Vigdis Controls Modification (TVCM) project. The contract, totaling USD 70 million, represents the first global deployment of the SemStar5.

The SemStar5 is a 5th-generation subsea electronics module developed by the VetcoGray division of GE Oil & Gas and designed for use in subsea production control systems. According to the company, the module—which draws on VetcoGray’s more than 25 years of subsea electronics experience—offers new levels of open-architecture, IP-enabled communication capabilities through the application of a modular design aimed at meeting the industry’s demands for standardization and expandability.

The module is capable of supporting a variety of modem options in terms of both type and speed, and additionally supports industry-standard interfaces SIIS 1-3 and IWIS, as well as full sensor interface capability. A 32-bit micro controller using a commercial real-time operating system processing module can be fitted as a daughterboard to any internal electronic module that requires processing power, each with its own independent IP address directly addressable from the surface. All internal cards have the same format and the majority can be fitted in any backplane slot.

In addition to its enhanced flexibility, the new subsea electronics module offers expanded reliability in the field, which is achieved through superior thermal management and modeling integral to the design, on-board diagnostics, and fault tolerant I/O. The company states that the robust mechanical construction will meet and exceed shock, vibration, and temperature-cycle requirements of ISO 13628-6 2006.

The innovation and potential positive impact of the SemStar5 were recognized by organizers of the May 2009 Offshore Technology Conference, who awarded GE Oil & Gas a Spotlight on New Technology Award in Houston. The module successfully met the five criteria for a Spotlight Award: the technology should be new, innovative, proven, used in a broad range of applications, and have a significant impact on the industry.

The TVCM project will upgrade the subsea controls systems of StatoilHydro’s Tordis and Vigdis oil fields, which are located in the North Sea, west of Norway in approximately 200 m of water. This project will be the first globally to deploy the SemStar5 with the aim of meeting the key objectives of higher subsea reliability, extended service life, and improved environmental monitoring.

The subsea electronics modules are being developed and manufactured at GE Oil & Gas’ Nailsea facilities in Bristol, UK, along with the VetcoGray ModPod subsea control modules, and will be shipped to Norway for installation offshore in 2010 and 2011.

GE Oil & Gas states that the TVCM project will further benefit from the company’s newly upgraded test and assembly facilities at Dusavik, Stavanger, Norway with the development of intervention tooling mainly being carried out from the Dusavik site.

“TVCM is an ideal opportunity to launch our VetcoGray SemStar5 subsea electronics module, which offers our customers an ultra-reliable, leading edge, and fully structured product,” said Manuel Terranova, senior vice president, Subsea Product Platform, GE Oil & Gas. “We recognize the importance of this new technology developed for StatoilHydro as a breakthrough concept for brownfield enhancements and see great leverage in applying the concept further worldwide.”
